BH2023/01680 | Treeworks in Conservation Area (Felling)

1 Flat 1 Florence Road Brighton Brighton & Hove BN1 6DL

The tree we are planning to fell is a Yew tree with a trunk with a circumference of 38cm. This tree is in the rear garden of 1 Florence Road and is growing against a the garden wall adjoining 3 Florence Road. A short distance behind the wall is their house. The tree is growing under and into another tree, a Beech. This tree is significant in size with a trunk the circumference of 3.4m. This tree also has a TPO. We have spoken to a arborist who has advised that the Yew is weakening the wall. On this basis we are planning to fell the Yew.

1A Ship Street Gardens Brighton Brighton & Hove BN1 1AJ

Felling of the trunk of a Fig tree that is diseased with Root Knot Nematode. The Fig tree trunk leans very close the the boundary wall and has branches that extend across and over the boundary wall. The tree has caused many cracks in this wall resulting in the lifting of several garden stones. I am concerned over the house foundations being safe and the sewer than runs directly underneath may become blockaged as their roots are likely to get into them . The Fig lost one of its main limbs last year due to this disease and has more weight on one side than the other making it more susceptible to falling which could cause harm or damage if it were to fall. I have been advise by a tree surgeon that it would be best to cut the tree down and replant a new Fig sapling in a better location.

Down House The Green Rottingdean Brighton Brighton & Hove BN2 7HA

1. Holm Oak (frontage, next to left side gate, large) Whilst on site I noticed that this tree is hollow at the base and has 3 fruiting bodies of the fungus Ganoderma adspersum present. The internal decay has created an 'Eiffel Tower effect' with the non functional heartwood having decayed away over time , leaving the surrounding sapwood. The Crown is very large and weighted heavily over the road, pavement and the neighbours house. I am concerned about the safety of this tree. I would strongly recommend the following specification of works is carried out within the next 6 months to reduce the 'sail area' in high winds and lessen weight on branch unions. Reduce in height by approx. 6m. Reduce back South -Western radial spread by approx. 4-5m to lessen weight on dog-legged limb with hazard beam. Reduce remainder of crown to balance and shape. Lift low branch over gates to upright sub branch . Crown lift all around to approx. 3m. remove major dead wood.
