A method statement attached outlines the detailed proposed measures to be taken to carry out for the correction and stabilisation of Brockhill Bridge, HMP Hewell Estate, Worcestershire. A combination of water erosion from overspill of Brockhill Weir and invasive tree root action at the West abutment (north wing-wall) of Brockhill Bridge have resulted in a destabilised arch. Relative displacement at the West abutment in three axis have allowed the northern arch to spring. Consequently, the bridge deck now lists towards the failed northern arch, the cast "crown-tie" at the crown of the arch has failed, along with the north parapet railings where the horizontal chords of the parapet have buckled in compression along with individual vertical balusters shearing in tension. It should be noted that the East abutment has also settled over the lifetime of the structure, but this does not appear to be to the detriment of the structure and is to a far lesser extent than the West. The engineers (Freyssinet) commissioned a 3D measured survey of the structure. Data from this survey is reflected in the sequenced concept drawings forming part of the proposal submission. The east abutment is fully recorded in current condition, and no intervention beyond conventional conservation measures are proposed i.e. limited to invasive Ivy removal, void grouting, ashlar stone repairs. The works will be undertaken during day-time hours only and would be carried out in accordance with the arboricultural and ecological impact assessments commissioned by Freyssinet. A small number of invasive trees to be removed as detailed in Freyssinet sequence drawings and arboricultural report enclosed within submission, along with works being overseen by an Ecological Clerk of Works. A Heritage Impact Assessment has also been undertaken by Worlledge Associates in assessing the proposals.
