Lowestoft Outer Harbour Lowestoft Suffolk
Non Material Amendment of DC/19/2753/RG3 - Construction of tidal flood walls in Lowestoft Outer Harbour, to provide a 1 in 200 (0.5%) AEP standard of protection against direct tidal flooding to residential and commercial areas of Lowestoft. - We have now completed the detailed design associated with accommodating the Anglian Water foul sewer rising mains adjacent to the bridge control building substation on Waveney road. The solution proposed, moves the primary line of flood defence within ABP land. Visually the appearance from the A47 side will not change as we are constructing a full height boundary wall in the same style as the flood wall along the boundary that forms part of the current approved planning permission drawings. Demountable barriers on top of a steel sheet piled ground water cut off will now be the primary flood defence, crossing the port land at this location. In terms of construction activity, we consider it to be a reduction of magnitude as there is no longer the need for the construction of a gravity flood wall at this location which required a substantial (deep) base slab to be constructed. This was ultimately not acceptable to Anglian Water and for us to continue with the current permitted design the rising mains would need to be diverted along the A47 resulting in a significant cost to the project and description of up to 6 months closure of the A47 - ultimately this was not considered to be acceptable to the project.
